Amanita muscaria as a remedy

Amanita muscaria is a wonder of nature that has often been used specifically for the benefit of health throughout history. However, its therapeutic potential has not yet been fully explored. The significant increase in interest in natural medicine and alternative healing methods in recent years has also revived the fly agaric as a remedy. This has even prompted some scientists to return to the old days when people relied on the effects of plants, mushrooms and herbs in medical treatments.

Historical and cultural significance

Amanita muscaria is certainly a particularly famous mushroom with strong historical and cultural ties. For thousands, and according to many sources even tens of thousands of years, the fly agaric has had a very special significance, especially in spiritual terms. According to written records, it has been consumed in ceremonial drinks for at least 4,000 years.

Even then, Siberian tribes in Russia knew that the fly agaric had healing powers. Among other things, they used it to combat inflammation and pain, as a stimulant and source of energy and as an effective remedy for anxiety. But the fly agaric can do much more - it has the potential to be a real game changer in terms of physical and mental well-being.

Although neither the fly agaric itself nor the active ingredient muscimol contained in it are banned by law in most countries, they are still primarily associated with psychedelic states in the minds of most people. But why? We look at the medicinal properties of the psychoactive ingredient and show you why this herbal medicine has always played an important role in our lives.

Potential therapeutic benefits

As mentioned, science is still far from being able to present us with comprehensive information on the treatment options with fly agaric microdosing. However, some interesting studies have already examined Muscimol and the Amanita mushroom more closely for their pain-relieving, anti-addictive and anxiety-relieving properties. And it has long been clear that the use of Amanita muscaria can offer new treatment options for physical and mental illnesses thanks to its psychoactive ingredients.

Anxiety, depression and stress

A 2021 study found that muscimol is a potent agonist (substance that triggers certain reactions). In the case of the fly agaric, muscimol docks onto our GABAA receptors, which inhibits activity in the central nervous system. This leads to an effective reduction in depression, anxiety and stress.

In addition, the study found that muscimol has anxiolytic properties, which means that the fly agaric can be used by people who want to improve their mental health.

Pain relief

A study conducted back in 2014 revealed that Muscimol has a very positive effect on neuropathic pain. After just three doses of Muscimol, the test subjects noticed a significant reduction in their acute neuropathic pain symptoms.

Encouraged by these results, the research team decided to continue their investigations into muscimol from fly agarics as a potential pain medication.

Sleep disorders

An animal study from the 1990s showed the influence of GABAA receptors on the regulation of sleep. In their experiments with muscimol and the sleeping pill midazolam, the researchers found that the psychoactive fly agaric can promote sleep phases at least as well as the conventional drug.

Further studies in this area led the researchers to the conclusion that the sleep-promoting effect of muscimol can be particularly useful for people suffering from sleep disorders or insomnia.

Treatment of addictions

While Amanita muscaria and the muscimol it contains are not themselves addictive, more recent research has shown that, in addition to psilocybin, muscimol may also be a promising treatment option for people with addictions, particularly alcohol addiction.

Optimizing the immune system

Regulating the immune system can adapt our body's own defense mechanisms to various causes of illness and pathogens and thus ensure a good state of health. The fly agaric contains bioactive compounds that can interact with the immune system. Eating dried Amanita muscaria can therefore also make a valuable contribution to strengthening our immune system.
